| All Custom Mouthpieces Are Not Created Equal. The original concept behind mouthpiece customizing is to create a unique and individual piece that gives you super performance and a unique sound that compliments your individual style. The player communicates his preferences to the customizer who then designs a mouthpiece for that particular player. There are still many great customizers who uphold this tradition, but in more recent years we are seeing many mouthpieces that are actually pre-made and still called "custom mouthpieces". Whether they are hand worked or not doesn't matter. They are still "cookie-cutter" mouthpieces. These mouthpiece makers may make two or three different models and all of the mouthpieces of each model sound the same. You pay anywhere from $150.00 to $500.00 (and more) for a pre-made mouthpiece. Some are better than others, but this still defeats the "custom made" concept. Jary Custom does not pre-make any mouthpieces and is happy to work closely with each individual customer and I offer free adjustments after the sale to all customers. Every Jary Custom Mouthpiece is a unique, individual creation, EXTENSIVELY hand worked and repeatedly play tested to make sure you get a mouthpiece with sound and performance qualities you want. Synthetic Reeds You can also request a Jary Custom mouthpiece specifically designed for the ultimate in performance and sound with the synthetic reed of your choice. I can adjust the baffle, facing and other factors to increase or decrease how bright or dark your piece will be and the level of power and projection your mouthpiece will have with the synthetic reed of your choosing. The late/great Nick Brignola introduced me to synthetic reeds. Many years ago he played Bari brand synthetics then switched to Fibracell Premiers. I have since added Legere and the Hartman Carbon Fiberreed to the list. You can also use cane on pieces that are setup for synthetics. Hand customizing and hand finishing is a rapidly disappearing art among todays mouthpiece makers. Due to time, personell and other cost limitations mouthpiece makers reduce hand finishing procedures to a minimum in order to meet production demands. |
| It is impossible for the big makers to hire and train enough skilled personell to custom hand work every mouthpiece in a production line fashion. Even many of the popular, high dollar mouthpieces come from a production line where there is very little time for hand finishing. Although many of these makers started out doing a lot of hand work, as soon as they became well known they went into mass production and more often than not, much of the quality is lost. And you are still paying top dollar for a mass produced sound. This is why Jary Custom gives you a superior mouthpiece.
